Costs and Options

Fibre broadband packages are available from a number of suppliers, with a range of capped and uncapped data limits, and a range of “Superfast” speeds.  Fibre broadband is generally more expensive than ADSL services, but not necessarily by much.

Consider using a cashback site

The best broadband offers are often made even more attractive if you sign up via a cashback website like Quidco.  Cashback offers change every few days, but can give up to around £140 back, saving over £10/month on a 12 month contract – and that’s on top of supplier’s own offers.  However be aware that to successfully receive cashback you need to follow the instructions provided by the cashback site fully, and do not treat the cashback as a guaranteed payment.

Not all providers have offers via cashback sites of course, especially if quality of service and support come at the top of your list of requirements.

Compare the current offers

BT, Sky, PlusNet and TalkTalk compete with a range of good deals, that mean for the average broadband consumer it’s worth shopping around every year or so and switching provider to get the lowest price.  Unless you’re currently locked in a contact, it should be possible to save £10-£20/month over the ‘standard’ fibre broadband pricing each offer.

Other Providers

EE and Vodafone also both offer mainstream fibre broadband packages, in particular discounted or with another kind of offer to their mobile customers.  EE for example provide a data boost on their customer’s mobile contracts and can help buy you out of an existing ASDL contract to migrate.

Specialist provider Andrews and Arnold (AA) are seemingly unique in offering the option for a ‘broadband only’ service without a conventional phone service, however at £45/mo (up to 38Mb) it is not the cheapest option.

Zen  are rated amongst the highest for customer service, and whilst they don’t discount like the larger providers, do offer an unlimited up to 78Mb package with line rental included for £46.99/mo, including a static IP address.

Pulse8 have an unlimited up to 38Mb package, with line rental included, for £38.00, and an up to 78Mb package with line rental, for £44.00.  Their set-up see is however £75.00, with ‘full costs’ for providing a VDSL router.  On the flip-side, there is no minimum contract term.

Please note the prices and specifications of the broadband packages are subject to change without notice and are as detailed on the individual providers websites.  We cannot accept any liability, but we do recommend:

  • you fully review the package on offer, including:
    • any set-up-charges, including connection charges and costs of a router
    • additional line rental cost
    • both upload as well as download speed
    • whether the package is unlimited, or if not what happens when the limit is reached, and any costs of exceeding the limit
    • what call package is included, and what the additional calling costs are
    • whether any specialist features are included, or if required can be added (for example, for some purposes a static IP address is essential, many of the larger providers do not offer these)
    • length of contract
